Hesketh Hesketh Prichard


Major Hesketh Vernon Prichard, later HeskethPrichard, DSO, MC, FRGS, FZS was an explorer, adventurer, biggame hunter and marksman who made a significant contribution to sniping practice within the British Army during the First World War. Concerned not only with improving the quality of marksmanship, the measures he introduced to counter the threat of German snipers were credited by a contemporary with saving the lives of over 3,500 Allied soldiers.

HeskethPrichard was born an only child onNovember 1876 in Jhansi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. His father Hesketh Brodrick Prichard, an officer in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, died from typhoid six weeks before he was born, leading him to be raised alone by his mother, Kate OBrien Ryall Prichard. She herself had come from a military family, her father being MajorGeneral Browne William Ryall.
